Mikael Owunna (b. 1990, Pittsburgh, USA) lives and works in Pittsburgh, having graduated in Biomedical Engineering and History from Duke University, USA. Recent group shows include Tate Modern, London, UK (2020); Center for Photographic Art, Carmel-by-the-Sea, USA (2020); and World Press Photo Exhibition, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2019).
Owunna’s artistic and photographic practice explores the relationship between engineering, optics, the Black body and queerness. As an artist, he strives to elevate and amplify the voices of marginalized communities. His work reflects on contemporary issues and urgent themes such as the violence against people of colour relayed through the media and the critical situation of LGBTQI+ African immigrants in North America and Europe.
