Nuotama Frances Bodomo (b. 1988, Accra, Ghana) is a filmmaker, writer and director living in New York, USA. Her first film, Boneshaker (2013) premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival before playing at SXSW, Pan African Film Festival and the Lincoln Center's African Film Festival. Her film Afronauts (2014) had its US premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and its international premiere at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival. It was included in the exhibition Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905–2016 at the Whitney Museum of American Art and exhibited at the 2018 Architecture Biennale in Venice (US Pavilion).
Bodomo’s filmic work and research attempts to decolonise filmmaking and its dominant narratives by bringing to the fore stories from the African continent that operate at the intersection of reality and fiction. Her work challenges colonial structures and categories of knowledge, such as authenticity, ultimately questioning the conventional representations and mono-dimensional depiction of Africa outside the continent.
