In this bold photographic series, Armenian photographer Karen Khachaturov playfully documents his own grandfather’s battle against cancer. Taken from the start of his diagnosis until his death, these somewhat surreal compositions draw our attention to the gap between the ordinary and the obscure and clearly show the regression in time we experience as we grow older and needier. The humorous nature of the images invites the viewer to explore themes of old age and death whilst side-stepping the typical caution or avoidance that we may often experience around such subject matter. The inevitability of our future confronts us, and our fragility and impermanence are exposed. Seeking to make visible the emotions experienced by his grandfather, the artist is perhaps attempting to fight the disease through art itself.
