Skawennati

Skawennati (b. 1970, Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, Canada) lives and works in Montreal, Canada. She holds a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal and is co-director, with Jason E. Lewis, of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace. Recent group exhibitions and biennales include Arsenal Contemporary Art Montreal, Montreal, Canada (2018) and BIAN – International Digital Art Biennial, Montreal. Her major online projects include: Cyber PowWow, TimeTraveller™ and She Falls for Ages.

Skawennati is internationally recognized for her pioneering new media projects. She works primarily in the digital space, ranging from the creation of an online gallery/chat space and mixed-reality event, to movies made in virtual environments. Her practice investigates subjects related to history, future and change – with a particular interest in exploring contemporary indigenous cultures. Her productions include still images, sculpture and textile works.
