Sofia Borges (b. 1984, Ribeirão Preto, Brazil) lives and works between São Paulo and Paris. Solo shows include Foam Fotografiemuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (2016); and 30ª Bienal de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil (2012); she recent participated in group exhibitions and in the following institutions and biennials PAC - Padiglione d'Arte Contemporanea, Milano, Italy (2018); 7th Daegu Photo Biennale, Daegu, South Korea (2018); MoMA, New York, USA (2018); and MAC - Musée d'art contemporain de Lyon, Lyon, France (2014).
Borges works primarily with photography, a media for analyze the fragments of the history and reflect to the notion of representation itself. Her subjects are usually ancient sculptures, archival objects, taxidermy animals, and more generally what has left traces in history. Removing them from their original context the artist render their content ambiguous, symbolic and investigates the origin and density of the image, exploring the relationship between matter and meaning.
