Sonia Balassanian (b. 1942, Iran) lives and works between New York, USA and Yerevan, Armenia. Solo shows include the Armenian Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy (2007); Armenian Center for Contemporary Art, Yerevan (2004); and The Sculpture Center, New York, USA (1992). The rich and articulated Balassanian production begins from an interest in abstract painting and takes in experimentation with collage, installation, performance and video art. In the late 1970s, galvanised by political events in Iran, she began concentrating on social and political issues, from the atrocities of war and the ensuing sufferings of trapped populations, to women's issues in the context of a modern world.
