WA'AD is a video work about a Palestinian astronaut of the same name, who lives on Mars with other astronauts. Against a visual representation of cosmic outer space, Wa’ad sends an electronic transmission of his own internal monologue and musings on life to Yazan, who lives on Earth in Marfa, Texas. Concepts of time and the past, utopian realities and the meaning of life itself are pondered through the transmission, and questions are raised as to whether new human achievements actually improve the lot of humanity or instead escalate a growing sense of isolation and alienation, highlighting in turn the core human need for connection. In this way the viewer is left to consider: “is the new and different any better?”.
